Get ready to be impressed!

The 2025 Annual Report from the Huntsville Police Department (HPD) is almost here and this one’s going to be a must-read.HPD patrol car parked at Big Spring Park by the silver arches

We crunched early data, chatted with folks at the department and teased out the three biggest themes you’ll want to know before the full report drops. Spoiler: the story of 2025 isn’t just numbers – it’s about what those numbers mean for the people who live, work and play in the Rocket City.

Highlight #1: Crime is down even as Huntsville grows

You’ve probably heard the saying, “you can’t have growth without growing pains.” Well, Huntsville is flipping that script.

In 2025:

  • Violent crime dropped 18%
  • Major crime declined 9%
  • All annual report-listed offenses dipped 6%

Zoom out, and the trend is even clearer.

Since 2019, Huntsville’s population has grown by roughly 24%. During that same period, violent crime is down about 50% and overall major crime has fallen around 33%.

Growth without the “growing pains”? That’s not accidental. That’s strategy.

Highlight #2: Policing with a purpose

This year’s report introduces a new section: Policing With a Purpose.

It highlights the proactive, community-centered work happening every day – from neighborhood engagement to problem-solving partnerships that prevent issues before they escalate.

It’s thoughtful, it’s intentional and it reflects a department focused not just on response, but on long-term impact.

Highlight #3: When crime happens, it gets solved

Behind every drop in crime is real work – investigators tracking leads, analyzing intelligence and taking offenders off the street.

The Huntsville Police Department’s Anti-Crime Team seized a significant amount of fentanyl and other illegal drugs after a routine traffic stop turned into a full-scale narcotics investigation on Monday, April 21.

In 2025, HPD’s Anti-Crime Team made 214 arrests, secured bond and probation revocations and removed more than $209,000 tied to criminal activity.

And that’s just one unit.

HPD’s General Investigations Unit carried one of the heaviest workloads in the department – working nearly 9,000 cases in 2025 alone.
