Huntsville is proud to be a leader in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) – and we were so excited to celebrate that heritage with Alabama’s first STEM Signing Day!

On Wednesday, the Davidson Center at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center was packed with elected officials, business and community leaders, and STEM educators from across the country to witness more than 50 high school seniors from Huntsville, Madison and Madison County high schools sign STEM Letters of Intent.

“What will you dream up and where will you take us?”

Just like signing days for athletes, the STEM Signing Day ceremony celebrates high school seniors as they make their commitments to study STEM fields at some of the country’s top colleges and universities. These students are putting themselves on the fast track for success as they pursue careers in STEM fields.

This STEM Signing Day celebration, presented by Boeing, was attended by proud families, excited students, and inspirational leaders. Sam Whiting, Director for Boeing Global Engagement and Strategy Lead for Education and Workforce Development from Seattle, Washington served as emcee for the event.

His remarks, made under the Saturn V, encouraged students to continue their pursuit of learning and included this challenge, “What will you dream up and where will you take us?”

The students honored in the ceremony are bright, passionate and determined. It will be these students, and students like them all across our world, who will develop new technologies and build things we haven’t yet dreamed. Our future relies on these future leaders, and if the students that were recognized today are any indication – our future is bright!

As the last student crossed the stage, the crowd jumped up to a standing ovation. Mr. Whiting told the seniors to look behind them and check out the crowd. As the students turned, they saw the powerful community support that will be behind them as they pursue their future careers in STEM.

We truly are what we celebrate – and in Huntsville, we celebrate the power of our young people!
