How to celebrate National Library Lover’s Month in Huntsville

single-meta-cal February 23, 2023

It’s National Library Lover’s Month! Fortunately, the Huntsville-Madison County Public Library (HMCPL) system provides plenty of ways for patrons to celebrate.

“During National Library Lover’s Month, we celebrate the incredible impact that libraries have on our communities,” said Cindy Hewitt, HMCPL executive director. “From providing access to information and resources, to promoting literacy and lifelong learning, libraries play a vital role in shaping our society.”

With everything from reading challenges to book clubs and festivals, HMCPL has cemented itself as the one-stop shop for all things reading and fun in the Rocket City.

Settle in for story time

Adults and children celebrate Mo Willems Day at library

Children listen during a birthday celebration for children’s book author Mo Willems at the Monrovia Library.

The library has activities for all ages! Depending on the day, storytellers could drop in for a quick reading or some music for babies, toddlers and other young children. Storytime also allows those kids to meet fellow future readers and get ahead of the curve on making friends.

Go back to school

The library hosts several classes on learning new languages and cultures — or even earning your GED! From learning English for the first time or Chinese history, the library offers multiple classes per week for those in the pursuit of knowledge.

Get crafty

You’re never too old for arts and crafts. The library provides craft classes for all ages at several of its 10 locations countywide. Those include “Lego Club,” “Teen Craft” and even a sewing social!

A book club for everyone

Even if you only like to read one specific book genre — there’s bound to be a book club at HMCPL for you. The many book clubs focus on everything, from classics like “Little Women” by Louisa May Alcott to books selected for homeschooled children, mystery lovers and those who can’t stop reading the booming young adult genre!

Get your head in the game

The library isn’t just where you can pick up your new favorite novel. There’s also a chance you’ll find like-minded friends who love to game. If you love chess, there’s a club for that. Big fan of Mah Jong? There are clubs for that, too. From Canasta to tabletop games and Bingo, there’s a game for everyone!

Just check out a book!

The simplest way to participate in National Library Lover’s Month is to just check out a book! HMCPL has 10 locations serving the area with thousands of books waiting to be taken home.

“This month, Huntsville-Madison County Public Library is encouraging the community to support our Love Your Library campaign,” Hewitt continued. “By joining the campaign, you can help us provide quality educational experiences for our youngest patrons, including the purchase of children’s books, phonics materials, literacy kits, and resources for parents and caregivers.”

Hewitt says your support can create a solid foundation for children to succeed in school. Join the program by clicking here.

It’s exciting to check something out during National Library Lover’s Month — but keep up the pace once February is over! Local libraries are among the most important parts of any community, so don’t let that resource go to waste.
