Pack your backpack – and these tips from HPD School Resource Officers

single-meta-cal July 30, 2025

Backpacks are zipped, buses are rolling and for some…alarm clocks are making a very unwelcome comeback. That can only mean one thing: school is back in session.

As students return to campuses across Huntsville City Schools, School Resource Officers (SROs) with the Huntsville Police Department (HPD) are right there with them – ready to protect, support and cheer on students from day one.

Whether you’re learning how to open a milk carton or prepping your college applications, SROs want to help you start strong, stay safe and feel confident all year long. We asked a few of them to share their best advice to help you navigate not just the first day but the school year as a whole like a pro.

Officer M. Joseph

Officer Joseph has served as an SRO for more than four years and recently returned to the role after a break during the COVID-19 pandemic. He’s assigned to Columbia High School.HPD Officer Joseph smiling for a picture Officer Joseph grew up in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, and loved Marine Biology – especially studying the marine life near the beaches he called home. Here’s what he wants students to keep in mind as they head into a new school year:

Everyone’s nervous – yes, even you.

“Most students feel just as anxious as you do. You’re not alone. Starting at a new school can be intimidating but remember that you are not the only “new” student. Take this chance to make new friends!”

You’re starting with straight A’s.

“Today is a brand-new day, and you begin with an A in every grade! Keep up the good work.”

Officer D. Pugh

Now in his third year as an SRO, Officer Pugh serves the students at Grissom High School. His favorite subject was science – especially when labs were involved. HPD Officer Pugh smiles for a picture

Officer Pugh’s advice? Stay focused and don’t be afraid to approach the SRO:

Learn more with your phone put up.

“You’ll be amazed how much easier it is to focus (and remember stuff) without distractions.”

Don’t be shy – come say hi.

“Don’t be afraid to talk to the SROs. We don’t bite. Promise.”

Officer T. Hasting

With five years of SRO experience, Officer Hasting covers Hampton Cove Elementary, Hampton Cove Middle and Goldsmith-Schiffman Elementary. HPD Officer Hasting smiles for a picture. His favorite class growing up? World history, thanks to a great teacher (Mr. Reynolds) who made learning fun. He’s all about staying alert and starting the year off on the right foot – literally:

Walk, don’t run.

“We know you’re excited to see your friends and teachers again, but slow your roll so no one gets bumped, tripped or shoulder checked. And if you’re a car rider, have your things ready to go at drop-off and dismissal – it helps traffic move smoothly and safely.”

See something? Say something.

“If you notice something that doesn’t feel right – like bullying, safety concerns or a classmate who seems upset – don’t keep it to yourself. Talk to an SRO or a teacher. We’re here to help.”
