Ever noticed those bold blue aisle stripes next to handicap accessible parking spots? They indicate where extra space for people who use wheelchairs or other mobility aids.
This extra space is essential to allow wheelchair ramps and lifts to be deployed and for mobility‑device users to maneuver safely, without striking neighboring vehicles. If any portion of the aisle is blocked – even just for a minute – a ramp may not deploy, equipment can be damaged, and a person can be left stranded.
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards require marked access aisles adjacent to accessible spaces; these aisles must be level and extend the full length of the space to discourage parking in them. The stripe color is not specified federally and colors may vary locally, but the rule is the same everywhere – do not park on the stripes.

Please Stay Off the Lines
Parking or idling on the stripes can prevent a wheelchair ramp from deploying and, in some cases, leave someone unable to enter or exit their vehicle until the blocking car moves.
“An access aisle is a lifeline. When you park on those blue stripes, you’re not saving a minute – you’re taking away someone’s ability to exit their vehicle safely,” Director of Parking & Public Transportation Quisha Bryant said.
Etiquette for All Drivers
Even if you have a disability placard or plate, please try to leave van‑accessible spaces open.
“If your vehicle doesn’t need a ramp or lift, choosing a standard accessible space keeps the van‑accessible spot open for neighbors who do. That’s how we keep Huntsville moving,” Bryant said.
Bryant asks drivers to please keep access aisles completely clear. Misusing accessible parking – by parking without a valid placard, using someone else’s, or blocking access aisles – can result in tickets and fines. Huntsville enforces handicap parking citywide.
